The town of Innisfail itself is located on the Bruce Highway, approximately 83km south of Cairns. The Innisfail District encompasses Babinda to the north and the townships and divisional stations of Tully, Mourilyan, Mission Beach, Cardwell, South Johnstone and Silkwood to the South. The district is mainly confined to the coastal areas and comprises of 5500 sq km.

The Mourilyan Harbour caters for cargo and freight ships, primarily associated with bulk sugar handling and is only a short drive from Innisfail. Other places of interest in the District include the popular Mission Beach, Etty Bay and Paronella Park. The township of Cardwell to the south of the district is the gateway to the Hinchinbrook Channel and is popular with fishing and boating enthusiasts.

There are only two current NHW areas in the District, one within the Babinda Division at Kurrimine Beach and the other in the Mourilyan area. Both NHW groups are supported by staff from their local stations.
