Welcome to Rockhampton District
Rockhampton, on the Tropic of Capricorn, is just 25 minutes away from the Pacific Ocean and sits astride Queensland's largest and most picturesque river, the Fitzroy. "Rocky" as it is affectionately known, is bounded by the magnificent Berserker Ranges and Mt Archer (which is 607 metres high). The city area covers 187 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 65,000 which includes North Rockhampton and Lakes Creek.
Rockhampton was founded in 1855, soon after the pioneering Archer Brothers settled at Gracemere, 6.5 km west of Rockhampton. It was named by Mr. W. Wiseman, Queensland's First Land Commissioner, who was inspired by the rocks in the river, which can be seen today under the Neville Hewitt Bridge at low tide. A mini gold rush at Canoona, 48 km to the North of Rockhampton, accelerated the establishment of the city, also with further gold discoveries at nearby Bouldercombe, Mount Wheeler and Mount Morgan ensured continuing economic growth of the region. Grazing, mining, farming and meat processing quickly developed as the primary industries of the resource-rich area, and Rockhampton thrived as the service centre.
NHW groups are currently active in the Rockhampton, North Rockhampton, Gracemere, Lakes Creek and Mount Morgan Divisions and are supported by an active District NHW committee.
