Welcome to Gladstone District
The Gladstone Region is diverse with surrounding shires featuring primary production – mining, beef cattle, dairy farming, timber, fruit and grains. To the east is the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park – including Heron Island Resort – providing opportunity for holidays, diving, fishing and cruises. The Gladstone District covers an area of approximately 38,200sq.km with an estimated population of 62,000 people.
The first settlement of Gladstone occurred in 1847. It was named after William Ewart Gladstone, who at the time, was the British Colonial Secretary. He later became Prime Minister of Great Britain. Basically a penal colony (200 convicts formed the majority of the population) it was closed down less than a year later and it wasn’t until 1854 that it was opened to free settlers. By 1856 the town had a population of 200. NHW group in the Gladstone District which are currently active is in Turkey Beach area. Previous active NHW groups are Baffle Creek (inactive status as of 19/05/2010) and Gladstone area (inactive as of the 20/01/2011).
